Ready to fall under the spell of collage? Join me for an eight-week course, where we’ll explore the wonderfully scrappy, layered, story-filled world of collage art. Each week, we’ll dive into hands-on exercises that build your skills. Think composition and color… but taught the fun way. Think layering and mixed media… but with zero pressure and lots of “let’s just see what happens.” You’ll work with a mix of found materials, handmade papers, ephemera, textures, paints, and anything else you feel like cutting up.

Studio 55 | Encaustic Explorations

Explore the world of Encaustic art, an ancient form of painting with hot pigmented beeswax used in a modern way! During this course participants will learn about encaustic history, materials, and safety. In this 4-day intensive workshop, students will explore a variety of techniques such as incising, layering, pigment sticks, mark-making, mixed media collage and monotypes. Designed for beginners and advanced skills alike, we will work together to focus on taking your encaustic journey to a new level!

Fundamental Designs in Adobe

Thursdays, May 7 – Jun 11 | 6:00–9:00 PM (6 classes)

This hands-on digital design course introduces students to the foundational elements and principles of design through Adobe Illustrator, using a reverse-engineering approach that demystifies complex visual compositions.

Modular patterns and Sacred Geometry are discussed as optional approaches. Rather than building from simple to complex, students will begin by observing sophisticated designs and deconstructing them into their fundamental components—revealing that inspiring, thought-provoking artwork is ultimately the result of basic elements thoughtfully combined.

Fundamental Figure Drawing

Sundays, May 31 – Jul 12 | 1:00–4:00 PM (7 classes *No class 7/5)
Ages 18+ | Beginner-Intermediate Level

This class will teach students to capture the character, structure, and movement of the human figure. Students will make a 18×24” tonal drawing from the live model and sketch the sculptures in the museum’s antiquities collection in order to learn core principles. Each lesson focuses on using simple tools to communicate the action of the body clearly and effectively.

*Drawing materials provided. This class has a live Nude Model.

Figure Drawing Study

Work in your drawing and painting media of choice or explore new ones. In these three-hour instructor-guided single-session classes, students will learn the fundamentals and expand their 2D knowledge while creating images from life. In this class, students will explore a range of photographic compositions using props and face paint to create one-of-a-kind, temporary settings, captured as fine art photography. Working with still life, self-portraits, and close-up abstract images, students will learn the basics of photography while drawing inspiration from the exhibition Avant Garde: Remarkable Women in the Permanent Collection, featuring artists such as Salina Roman, Wendy Babcox, and Angela Kullman.

Poetry + Visual Art: The Marriage of Text and Image

Ever since humans began creating art, poetic words have often found companionship with visual images. In this workshop, students will combine their own poetic written words together with a visual art expression that they will create, inspired by those words. Students will have the option of utilizing painting, drawing or collage as an accompaniment to their poetic writing.

Expressive Poetry

Since ancient times, humans have created meaning of our world and the afterlife through the art of poetic expression. This “River of My Life: A Poetic Expression Workshop” will engage students in communicating with ancient artworks through poetic writing, inspired by the “Mysteries of the Nile: Ancient Egypt” exhibition. Through the use of stream of consciousness and ekphrastic poetry activities, students will be able to express their own “river of life.”

Blackout Poetry

Saturday, May 23 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Ages 16+ | Beginner Level

Blackout Poetry highlights hidden meanings and the spaces that exist within the material around us. By training our poetic vision that’s often necessary in any art-making, students will create their own blackout poetry, focusing on negative space and transforming the meaning of existing materials. Materials will include newspapers, magazines, books and Sharpie markers. This workshop is inspired by Jun Kaneko’s “Silence Before Sound” exhibition.
