This course introduces students to the essential skills of creating with clay in a calm and welcoming studio setting. You will learn the full clay-to-ceramic process through hand-building and basic wheel-throwing techniques. Along the way, you’ll explore form, texture, surface design, and glazing. Designed for both beginners and returning students, this class offers a space to develop meaningful, hands-on skills and a deeper understanding of the craft.

Ceramics Continued Study is a space for students to enhance their learning experience with instructor assistance and guiding knowledge. Sign up for a single class to continue working and add the finishing touches on projects you’ve started in one of our other classes. Sign up for multiple classes to choose your own adventure in hand-building or wheel thrown ceramics. Work with your instructor to plan out your projects and make them a reality. Some experience with clay is recommended.

Fundamental Figure Drawing

Sundays, Jan 11 – Mar 1 | 1:00–4:00 PM (7 classes)
Ages 18+ | All Levels
This class will teach students to capture the character, structure, and movement of the human figure. Students will make a 18×24” tonal drawing from the live model and sketch the sculptures in the museum’s antiquities collection in order to learn core principles. Each lesson focuses on using simple tools to communicate the action of the body clearly and effectively.
*Drawing materials provided. This class has a live Nude Model.

Studio 55 | Weaving On and Off the Loom | TMA@Firehouse

Wednesdays, Jan 28 – Mar 4 | 1:00–4:00 PM (7 classes)
Ages 55+ | Beginner-Intermediate Level
Be inspired by artists Mark Bradford and Charles Atlas while learning the art of fabric weaving. Using paper, fabric and thread students will warp and weft their way to unique tapestry designs that include a phone bag, wall hanging, coil basket, and greeting cards. Don’t miss this fun 6 weeks of unconventional weaving on and off the loom.

Remix | Jun Kaneko

Remix is a series of make-and-take art workshops for adults inspired by the Museum’s current exhibitions with a new project every month. Workshops are designed to be enjoyed by participants of any skill level and all materials are provided. This month’s project will be inspired by the Jun Kaneko: Silence Before Sound exhibition where students will learn the art of glaze painting on their own ceramic tile and dango.

Encaustic Monotype Basics

Monday Mar 9 – Tuesday Mar 10 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (2 classes)
Ages 18+ | Beginner Level
In this specialized class students will learn the process of encaustic monotype printing and manipulation to those prints using a heated hot box. Monotype with a hot box involves creating an encaustic print on a heated hot box which was invented by Paula Roland. The artist applies and manipulates molten wax on the heated surface with tools, then transfers the image to paper. This can be a one-of-kind print or can have layers added to create ghost prints.
*Basic encaustic experience required.
