Internationally renowned artist Thomas Sayre will speak about his current exhibition White Gold: Thomas Sayre on view at the Tampa Museum of Art. Hear Sayre share insight on his artistic practice and learn about his commissioned projects across the globe. Sayre is best known for his “earthcasting,” a complex process developed by the artist to create his monumental works of art.
About the Artist
Thomas Sayre (American, b. 1950) grew up in Washington D.C. and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar, majoring in English and Studio Art. He attended the Master of Fine Arts program at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and received an honorary doctorate from North Carolina State University in 2014. Sayre’s commissioned public works are included in various collections across the United States with projects in Denver, Colorado; Portland, Oregon; Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee; San Jose, California; Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona; Baltimore, Maryland; Washington D.C.; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Internationally, he has commissioned public projects in Istanbul, Turkey; Phuket, Thailand; Hong Kong; and Calgary and Ontario, Canada. The City of Tampa commissioned Sayre’s Ripple Gates (2018) at the entrance of Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Sayre currently lives and works in North Carolina.
