Lecture – “I do not judge, I only chronicle.”: The Portraits and Landscapes of John Singer Sargent

December 3, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join us for a lecture with Dr. Kaia Magnusen as she shares her expertise alongside Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum.

John Singer Sargent was an acclaimed society portraitist whose stunning portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau caused a scandal that contributed to his decision to move from Paris to London. Despite his reputation as a talented portraitist, Sargent felt that genre was limiting, and he created dazzling watercolors of landscapes and other subjects that demonstrate his impressive skill as a painter.

Lectures at the Tampa Museum of Art are free with the cost of Admission.

Kaia L. Magnusen, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Art and Design, specifically art history and museum studies, at the University of Tampa.  Previously, she was an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Texas at Tyler.  She received her doctorate from Rutgers University and her Master’s Degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

Magnusen specializes in European and American modern art and international contemporary art. Her research interests include depictions of physical and mental illness in art and visual culture, visualizations of death, interwar conceptions of ideal and “deviant” masculinity and femininity, the interactions between art and technology, bio art, and semiotic theory.

In modern art, her current research focuses on the art of the Neue Sachlichkeit, especially the work of Otto Dix and other interwar artists including Max Beckmann and Käthe Kollwitz. Her research on contemporary art includes the work of American artists Makoto Fujimura and Jeff Koons, Eritrean-born artist Aida Silvestri, and Australian artist Simone Mangoes.

She has independently curated nineteen exhibitions and is in the process of planning an exhibition on the prints of American printmaker D.L. Simmons, which will be on view at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa in Fall 2024.
