Studio 55

Studio 55 - Tampa Museum of Art

Unleash your creativity with the Tampa Museum of Art’s fun vitality arts program series called Studio 55! Funded by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy, these programs offer a unique opportunity for adults 55 years of age and older to learn new art-making techniques, gain a sense of accomplishment, and forge new relationships.

What We’re Doing and Why

Led by teaching artists, these multi-session, hands-on workshops are designed to improve health and well-being and provide a renewed sense of purpose for participants. We have also created a Studio 55 Facebook group to encourage engagement outside of the classroom with our online community. Loneliness and isolation are negatively affecting the health of many older adults. Research shows that getting involved in arts and culture can boost our well-being, our connections with others, and improve our cognitive, emotional, and physical health as we age.

Museum Support for Vitality Arts Programs

In 2021, the American Alliance of Museums released a significant report titled “Museums and Creative Aging: A Healthful Partnership.” The report urges all museums to create programs that promote creative aging and address ageism as a strategic and ethical priority.

Museums that participate in Vitality Arts programs, like TMA’s Studio 55 program, receive an array of support from E.A. Michelson beyond funding. In particular, the Tampa Museum of Art staff received training and technical assistance in program design and implementation.
