SUMMARY:Surface and Fire! | A Jun Kaneko Inspired Raku Firing
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, Jun 3 – 24 | 6:00 –9:00 PM (4 classes)\nAges 18+ | Beginner-Intermediate Level \nThis four-week workshop immerses students in the bold forms and graphic surfaces that define Jun Kaneko’s iconic ceramic practice\, with participants creating sculptural pieces no larger than eight inches cubed. \nOver the first three weeks at the Tampa Museum of Art\, students will construct smaller-scale works and apply raku-specific glazes with an emphasis on mark-making\, pattern\, and architectural presence. The workshop culminates in an exhilarating fourth week at the City of Tampa Golding Art Studio\, where participants will fire their pieces in the raku tradition\, pulling glowing ceramics from the kiln and witnessing the dramatic transformations of post-fire reduction. \nDrawing inspiration from Kaneko’s monumental approach while working at an accessible scale\, this course invites both beginners and experienced ceramicists to explore the dynamic relationship between form\, surface\, and fire. \nClass location Schedule: \nJune 3\, 10 and 17 take place at Tampa Museum of Art Vinik Family Education Center \nJune 24 class takes place at the City of Tampa Golding Art Studio at Shanna and Bryan Glazer JCC \nAll Supplies and Clay included. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Vaughn Spann in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Vaughn Spann in Conversation\nJoin us for an engaging conversation with artist Vaughn Spann. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Vaughn Spann: Allegories at the Tampa Museum of Art\, this program offers an opportunity to hear the artist discuss his Marked Men series alongside his broader artistic practice and evolving body of work. Spann will be joined in conversation by Joanna Robotham\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Tampa Museum of Art. \nLectures are offered free with the cost of daily admission: \n\nArt+ Museum Members: Free\nNot-Yet-Members: $25\nCollege Students: Free\n\nRSVP for this program \nBorn in 1992 in Florida\, Vaughn Spann lives and works in New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Rutgers University and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting & Printmaking from the Yale School of Art. \nMoving fluidly between abstraction and figuration\, Spann’s practice is devoted to investigating space\, time\, and memory. Drawing from diverse subjects including the deeply personal\, he reconciles with his body within and beyond the studio. With a deep admiration for formalism\, the artist approaches his paintings through the lens of color\, line\, and shape\, grounded in the foundational acknowledgement that one’s subjectivity can’t simply be divorced from the studio. \nFor Spann\, form provides a powerful vehicle for generating meaning. His work engages familiar symbols– from the X to the American flag– and transforms them into layered interrogations of history\, power\, and signification. These formal inquiries permeate throughout his paintings\, symbolically reflecting his encounters with diverse people and places. Through his well-known stylistic separations\, Spann continues to vigorously experiment with unconventional materials while expanding his personal and historical narratives. \nRecent solo exhibitions include ‘Allegories’\, Tampa Museum of Art\, FL\, US (2024); ‘Vaughn Spann: Lineage’\, Samek Art Museum\, Bucknell University\, Lewisburg\, PA\, US (2021); and ‘Vaughn Spann: Open Onto’\, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art\, Kansas City\, MO\, US (2020). Spann has also participated in group shows at notable institutions such as the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture\, Charlotte\, NC\, US (2026); the Museum of Art and Design Miami Dade College Freedom Tower\, FL\, US (2026); the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo\, Seville\, Spain (2026); the Bunker\, Miami\, FL\, US (2025); the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice\, New York\, NY\, US (2025); the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD)\, La Jolla\, CA\, US (2025); the Brooklyn Museum\, New York\, NY\, US (2024); the Vanhaerents Art Collection\, Tripostal\, Lille\, France (2023); and ICA Miami\, FL\, US (2022). \nThe artist’s work is present in many prestigious collections\, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, CA\, US; the Rubell Museum\, Miami\, FL\, US; the Hirshhorn Museum\, Washington\, DC\, US; the Buffalo AKG Art Museum\, NY\, US; the Norton Museum of Art\, West Palm Beach\, FL\, US; the Brooklyn Museum\, NY\, US; the Bass Museum of Art\, Miami\, FL\, US; the Birmingham Museum of Art\, AL\, US; the Perez Art Museum\, Miami\, FL\, US; the Montclair Art Museum\, NJ\, US; the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, IN\, US; and the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\, US. \n  \nImage Caption: Vaughn Spann (American\, b. 1992)\, Manifestations\, 2023. SUMMARY:Art Conversation - I Sing Because I am Happy: Florida Self-Taught Artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and interactive discussion at the C. Blythe Andrews\, Jr. Public Library. \nJoanna Robotham\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Tampa Museum of Art\, will present a talk on three of Florida’s distinguished self-taught artists: Harold Newton\, Purvis Young\, and Ruby C. Williams. Each artist found success as painters despite the adversity they faced during the Jim Crow era. On the Space Coast\, Harold Newton was regarded as one of the pillars of the Florida Highway\, a collective known for their idyllic landscapes of Florida’s shorelines and rivers. Purvis Young  painted his Overtown neighborhood in Miami in his assemblage artworks. Ruby C. Williams\, known locally as Miss Ruby\, created vibrant fruit and vegetable signs to advertise her family’s farm in Bealsville. A woman of faith\, Miss Ruby also painted imagery with uplighting hymns. \nHarold Newton\, Purvis Young\, and Ruby C. Williams’s art are part of the Tampa Museum of Art’s permanent collection. They are featured artists in the poster exhibition Made in Florida\, on view across the Hillsborough County Library system. \nRegister for this Program \nImage: Harold Newton\, (American\, 1934-1991)\, Untitled (Painting of the Indian River)\, c. 1958\, Oil on board\, 26 x 33 5/8 x 2 inches\, Tampa Museum of Art\, Gift of Margot L.
