SUMMARY:Antiquities Lecture: When Women Ruled The World
DESCRIPTION:When Women Ruled The World \nA woman’s power in the ancient world (and much of human history) was always compromised from the outset\, but who were the women who once ruled the richest and most successful state of the ancient Mediterranean during the Bronze Age? Ancient Egyptian female kings\, including Hatshepsut and Nefertiti\, really did rule against all odds. Given this social reality in the ancient world\, how then did women negotiate roles or power and authority? Addressing some of the causes of social inequality in this lecture\, Prof. Kara Cooney will go beyond myth and legend to shed light on these female pharaohs and reveal their historical legacy. \nSponsored by Charles & Elizabeth Lyman\nLectures are offered free with the cost of daily admission: \n\nArt+ Museum Members: Free\nNot-Yet-Members: $25\nCollege Students: Free\n\nRSVP for this program \nKara Cooney is a professor of ancient Egyptian art and architecture and chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Specializing in social history\, gender studies\, and economies of the ancient world\, she received her PhD in Egyptology from Johns Hopkins University. Her books include The Woman Who Would Be King: Hatshepsut’s Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt\, When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt\, and The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World. Her latest books include Recycling for Death: Coffin Reuse in Ancient Egypt and the Theban Royal Caches\, Ancient Egyptian Society: Challenging Assumptions\, Exploring Approaches\, and Coffin Commerce. \n  \nImage Caption: Bust of Nefertiti (Plaster sculpture\, replica; Egypt; Modern\, 1933). SUMMARY:Fundamental Designs in Adobe
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, May 7 – Jun 11 | 6:00–9:00 PM (6 classes)\nAges 18+ | Beginner Level \nThis hands-on digital design course introduces students to the foundational elements and principles of design through Adobe Illustrator\, using a reverse-engineering approach that demystifies complex visual compositions. \nModular patterns and Sacred Geometry are discussed as optional approaches. Rather than building from simple to complex\, students will begin by observing sophisticated designs and deconstructing them into their fundamental components—revealing that inspiring\, thought-provoking artwork is ultimately the result of basic elements thoughtfully combined. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Surface and Fire! | A Jun Kaneko Inspired Raku Firing
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, Jun 3 – 24 | 6:00 –9:00 PM (4 classes)\nAges 18+ | Beginner-Intermediate Level \nThis four-week workshop immerses students in the bold forms and graphic surfaces that define Jun Kaneko’s iconic ceramic practice\, with participants creating sculptural pieces no larger than eight inches cubed. \nOver the first three weeks at the Tampa Museum of Art\, students will construct smaller-scale works and apply raku-specific glazes with an emphasis on mark-making\, pattern\, and architectural presence. The workshop culminates in an exhilarating fourth week at the City of Tampa Golding Art Studio\, where participants will fire their pieces in the raku tradition\, pulling glowing ceramics from the kiln and witnessing the dramatic transformations of post-fire reduction. \nDrawing inspiration from Kaneko’s monumental approach while working at an accessible scale\, this course invites both beginners and experienced ceramicists to explore the dynamic relationship between form\, surface\, and fire. \nClass location Schedule: \nJune 3\, 10 and 17 take place at Tampa Museum of Art Vinik Family Education Center \nJune 24 class takes place at the City of Tampa Golding Art Studio at Shanna and Bryan Glazer JCC \nAll Supplies and Clay included. \nRegister Now
