Pioneers and Contemporaries Film Series

Join us for Pioneers and Contemporaries, a series of films illuminating the lives and works of women photographers from the exhibition, Modern Women: Modern Vision, Works from the Bank of America Collection. The film series highlights legendary pioneers who elevated photography as an art form, as well as contemporary photographers redefining the medium.

The event will begin with a brief introduction by Suzanne Williamson, Curatorial Department Assistant, followed by a screening of the film/s. Check-in and registration begins at 6p. First film begins promptly at 6:30p. RSVP to Education@TampaMuseum.org

About the films:
  • In the Street, 1948, is a silent documentary short, by photographer Helen Levitt (American, 1913-2009), filmmaker Janice Loeb (American, 1902-1996), and writer James Agee (American, 1908-1955), that explores Spanish Harlem, New York City. The filmmakers used hidden 16mm cameras to capture the everyday lives of Harlem residents in the neighborhood, especially children. Contributors: Helen Levitt, Janice Loeb, and James Agee.   • In the short film Berenice Abbott: A View of the Twentieth Century, 1993, 92-year-old Berenice Abbott (American, 1898-1991), shares frank observations from her six-decade career. The documentary features over 200 of her powerful black and white images, and commentary by curators and critics. From her portraits of the avant-garde in Paris during the 1920’s, documentation of New York in the 1930’s, to her science photography of the ’50s, and her studies of small-town America, Abbott’s focus and range of work is unsurpassed.Berenice Abbott: A View of the Twentieth Century, 1993, Directed by Kay Weaver and Martha Wheelock.
