FRIENDS of the Museum is a volunteer auxiliary group of the Tampa Museum of Art. Membership in FRIENDS is open to all members of the Tampa Museum of Art who wish to support the Museum through volunteer service. All FRIENDS make a $25 annual contribution to the group (in addition to their Museum membership). These membership fees help to make possible the major initiatives undertaken by the FRIENDS each year, listed below.
As one of the main volunteer fundraising arms of the Museum, FRIENDS of the Museum contributes funds each year to support exhibitions and educational programs. Its main fundraisers include the concession sales at the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, Run for the Roses (a Kentucky Derby party), and its newest initiative, the Silent Disco! FRIENDS of the Museum also help to host our Members-Only Exhibition Previews, held on Friday evenings before new exhibitions open to the general public.
In past years, FRIENDS of the Museum, as well as its forerunner, known as FOTA (Friends of the Arts), have also contributed toward the purchase of artwork for the Museum’s permanent collection. This began with the very first object purchased by the Museum, an ancient Greek black-figure column krater, or mixing vessel in 1981, and continued more recently with Sky (Tampa) the iconic light installation by Leo Villareal on the south façade of our new building in 2010. With this public art display, the Museum and the FRIENDS make a nightly contribution to the beauty of the city of Tampa. Please join the FRIENDS of the Museum to help support the Tampa Museum of Art!
